After
spending a week on the beach in PEI, we started to make our way back to Nova
Scotia. We decided to take the long way around, instead of the ferry, stopping
at Green Gables for a few hours. Parks Canada has created a series of
‘xplorers’ books for children to do while visiting many of their sites. Green
Gables was one of them and I believe that by trying to do as many activities at
they could, the children walked away with much more knowledge of the site than
if we had simply walked around trying to read signs. At the end of our visit, I
went into the gift shop and the kids showed a park employee their work and
received dog tags in exchange. As mentioned before, I have yet to read any of
the books in the series, so I bought the first to hopefully be read during our
trip. Even though we haven’t read the books, we were all very happy that we
decided to visit the park. It was very well maintained and had many interactive
activities.
After leaving the park, we drove for the rest
of the afternoon and evening, arriving at a campground near Tatamagouche Bay
around sunset. The name “Tatamagouche” reminded me of an old friend from Cold
Lake, who I was sure had grown up there. I sent her a quick message letting her
know where we were. She was so excited by our location that she called to tell
us about a white cottage that we would be able to see from the beach. Sure enough,
when we set out to explore the shore in the morning, there it stood. Watching
over us as our children played on the beaches of my friends childhood summers.
